Golden Square is where Bendigo’s gold rush began. Gold was found in the bed of Bendigo Creek in 1851, close to where the Golden Square Hotel stands today. The suburb still follows the street layout surveyed in 1853 to 1854, with elm-lined avenues, and it had about 9,200 residents at the 2021 census.
Bendigo Retaining Walls connects Golden Square homeowners with a local, registered and insured retaining wall builder for a free, no-obligation quote. Call 0485 557 649 to get started.

Steeper ground to the west
The City’s Golden Square Heritage Study describes a ridge of rises to the west of the suburb, including Specimen Hill, with Bendigo Creek and its tributary Back Creek running through the lower ground. The rises are old sandstone, siltstone and mudstone, while the creeks and gullies hold alluvial sand, clay and gravel. Two blocks a few streets apart can need quite different footings.
On sloping lots, drainage is critical. Read sloping blocks and drainage.
Heritage and mining history
Golden Square has been the subject of a City heritage study and a 2022 structure plan. If your property is in a Heritage Overlay, works visible from the street may need a planning permit, so check with the City of Greater Bendigo before you settle on a design. Natural stone or rendered block can suit period homes.
The suburb’s valleys and reefs were extensively mined, and the heritage study notes that numerous historical and archaeological mining sites survive. EPA Victoria advises anyone excavating in historical mining areas to check the site’s history and stop to assess if they find suspected mining waste. See block and stone walls and our permit guide.
Retaining walls in Golden Square: FAQ
Do I need a permit?
In Greater Bendigo, a wall of 1 metre or more needs a building permit, and so does a wall of any height on or near a boundary. Read our permit guide or ask your builder.
Can a retaining wall match an old home?
Yes. Sandstone, natural stone, rendered block and some concrete sleeper finishes can all suit period homes. Ask your builder to show you options.
How much will it cost?
See the retaining wall cost guide for typical ranges.
