Concrete Sleeper Retaining Walls in Bendigo

Concrete sleeper walls have become one of the most common ways to retain a sloping block in Victoria. They’re strong, tidy, and they don’t rot or attract termites. Bendigo Retaining Walls connects you with a local, registered and insured builder who can design, quote and build a concrete sleeper wall for your property.

How a concrete sleeper wall works

A concrete sleeper wall has two main parts. Galvanised steel posts, usually H-shaped universal column (UC) posts, are set into concrete footings in bored holes along the wall line. Precast, steel-reinforced concrete sleepers then slide down between the posts and stack on top of each other to the height you need. End and corner posts use special profiles so the sleepers can finish neatly or turn a corner.

Because the strength comes from the posts and their footings, the depth of each footing and the size and spacing of the posts matter a lot. Taller walls, walls holding back a driveway or a building, and walls in soft or reactive ground need bigger posts, deeper footings or closer spacing. That’s where a builder’s experience, and for permitted walls an engineer’s design, really counts.

Typical build steps

  1. Set out the wall line and levels, and check for underground services. A free Before You Dig Australia enquiry at byda.com.au shows network assets, though private lines usually aren’t on the plans.
  2. Excavate the slope where needed and bore the post holes.
  3. Stand the posts in concrete at the right height, spacing and lean, then let the concrete cure.
  4. Slide the sleepers in, row by row, checking level as the wall goes up.
  5. Lay an ag drain at the base, backfill behind the wall with drainage gravel wrapped in filter fabric, and connect the drain to a suitable outlet.
  6. Backfill, compact and finish the levels and garden above and below the wall.

Finishes and colours

Concrete sleepers come in a range of looks, from plain grey to charcoal and sandstone tones, and in textures including smooth, rockface and timber-look profiles. Because the colour is generally mixed through the concrete, it holds up well over time. Plain grey is usually the cheapest. Your builder can show you the ranges they use and what’s available locally.

Height, permits and engineering

In Greater Bendigo, a retaining wall that is 1 metre or more in height needs a building permit, and so can a lower wall that is on or near a boundary or that could affect a neighbour’s land or buildings. Walls that need a permit will usually also need a design from a structural engineer. Some sleeper manufacturers publish engineered designs for quite tall walls, but every site is different, so the design for your wall should match your soil, height and loads. Read our Bendigo retaining wall permit guide for the details.

Fences on top and boundary walls

Many boundary walls also carry a fence. A fence adds wind load and weight to the wall, so the posts and footings need to be designed for both. Tell your builder early if you want a fence on top, and talk with your neighbour before work starts on a shared boundary.

Drainage behind the wall

Water is the biggest enemy of any retaining wall. Concrete sleepers are solid, so water behind the wall needs a way out. A good build includes an ag pipe at the base, clean gravel behind the sleepers, filter fabric to stop soil clogging the gravel, and an outlet that doesn’t dump water onto your neighbour.
