What to have ready
- Your suburb and street
- Roughly how long the wall needs to be, and how high at its tallest point
- What it’s holding back: a garden, a driveway, a shed or house pad, or a neighbour’s yard
- Whether it’s on or near a boundary
- Your preferred material, if you have one (concrete sleeper, timber, block or stone)
- Whether there’s an old wall to remove
- Side access: gate width, and whether a small excavator could get in
- Any known underground pipes, drains or cables, or known mining history
Photos help
If you can, take photos of the whole slope from both ends, the highest point with a tape measure or spade for scale, and the access from the street. Your builder may ask you to send them before the site visit.

Bendigo Retaining Walls doesn’t build walls itself. We connect you with one independent, local retaining wall builder who is registered and insured. The builder inspects the site, gives you the quote, and if you go ahead, contracts with you directly and builds the wall. Builder registration details are provided with your quote. You can check it on the Building and Plumbing Commission’s Find and check a practitioner search at bpc.vic.gov.au.
Getting the most from the site visit
- Mark out roughly where you want the wall with string, stakes or spray paint.
- Know where your boundary pegs or fences are, and whether your neighbour knows about the job.
- Have your title, plan of subdivision or estate design guidelines handy if you’re on a new estate.
- Ask about drainage, permits, engineering, spoil removal and timing, and get the answers in the written quote.
