What will your retaining wall cost? The honest answer is that it depends on the height, length, material and the site itself. This guide pulls together typical published price ranges so you can budget before you call. Bendigo Retaining Walls is a referral service: we connect you with a local, registered and insured builder, who gives you a free, written quote and sets the final price.

Typical retaining wall prices per square metre
Retaining walls are usually priced per square metre of wall face (length multiplied by exposed height), supplied and installed. These are the ranges published by national and Victorian price guides in 2026. They are typical ranges, not quotes, and they weren’t written specifically for Bendigo.
| Wall type | Typical installed range (per m²) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete sleeper, up to about 1 m high | $350–$500 | The Quote Yard (Victoria, 2026) |
| Concrete sleeper, about 1.2–2.0 m high | $450–$650 | The Quote Yard (Victoria, 2026) |
| Concrete sleeper (national average) | $450–$700 | hipages |
| Treated pine sleeper | $250–$350 | hipages (2026) |
| Timber sleeper, up to 1 m (Victoria) | $250–$380 | The Quote Yard (Victoria, 2026) |
| Treated hardwood sleeper | $300–$450 | hipages (2026) |
| Besser (concrete masonry) block | $350–$550 (Vic.) to $550–$700 (national) | The Quote Yard; hipages |
| Sandstone block | $300–$550 | hipages (2026) |
| Natural stone, dry-stacked | $350–$550 | The Quote Yard (Victoria, 2026) |
In plain terms, a 10 metre long concrete sleeper wall that is 1 metre high has 10 m² of face. At $350–$500 per m², the wall itself would typically come to around $3,500–$5,000 before any extras. Using the national hipages range, the same wall would be about $4,500–$7,000. For more on the material, see concrete sleeper retaining walls.
What changes the price
- Height. Taller walls need longer, heavier posts set deeper, and walls of 1 metre or more need a building permit and usually an engineer’s design. Cost per square metre rises with height.
- Excavation and spoil. Cutting into a slope creates soil that has to go somewhere. Removal and tip fees are often priced separately.
- Ground conditions. Rock, old fill, clay or mining waste can slow post-hole digging or change the footing design.
- Drainage. A proper wall has an ag drain, gravel backfill and a legal outlet for the water. See sloping blocks and drainage.
- Access. Narrow side access, steep yards or no room for a small excavator means more hand work.
- Finish. Plain grey concrete sleepers cost less than timber-look, charcoal or textured finishes.
- Extras. Fences on top of the wall, steps, corners, demolition of an old wall and landscaping all add to the total.
Engineering and permit costs
If your wall needs a building permit, budget for the building surveyor’s fees and, in most cases, a structural engineer’s design. The Quote Yard’s 2026 Victorian guide puts engineering for a residential retaining wall at about $800 to $2,500 depending on complexity. Fees vary, so ask for them in writing. Our permit guide explains when a permit applies in Bendigo.
Materials-only prices
If you’re curious about the raw materials, one Victorian supplier that delivers to Bendigo advertised concrete sleepers from about $40 and steel posts from about $50 each in October 2026, with premium finishes and heavy-duty posts costing much more. Materials are only part of the job: footings, labour, drainage, excavation and backfill make up the rest.
How to compare quotes
- Check the quote states the wall length, height, sleeper type and finish, and post size and spacing.
- Look for drainage details: ag pipe, gravel backfill, filter fabric and where the water goes.
- Ask whether excavation, spoil removal, engineering and permit fees are included.
- Check the builder’s registration with the Building and Plumbing Commission. For most domestic building work over $10,000, Victorian law requires a major domestic building contract with a registered builder.
- Ask about the timeframe and what warranty the builder offers.
Retaining wall cost FAQ
Is concrete or timber cheaper?
Timber is usually cheaper up front. Concrete sleepers cost more but last much longer. See timber sleeper walls for the trade-offs.
Why are quotes so different?
Quotes often include different things. One may include spoil removal, drainage and engineering, and another may not. Compare line by line.
Can I get a price over the phone?
A builder can usually give a rough idea from measurements and photos, but a firm quote needs a site visit. Call 0485 557 649 to start.
