Not every wall has to be sleepers. Block and stone walls can suit rendered homes, formal gardens, curved garden beds and heritage settings. Bendigo Retaining Walls connects you with a local, registered and insured builder who can tell you which option suits your site and budget, and quote it for free.

Besser block (concrete masonry) walls
Besser blocks are hollow concrete blocks laid on a concrete strip footing. For retaining, the hollow cores are reinforced with steel bars and filled with concrete, creating a solid structural wall. They can be left plain, rendered and painted to match the house, or clad. Because they’re built on a continuous footing, they suit walls that need a clean, formal look or that sit close to the house.
Besser walls take more labour than sleeper walls, so they usually cost more. Published guides put them at about $350–$550 per m² in Victoria (The Quote Yard) and $550–$700 per m² nationally (hipages). Walls at or above the permit height need an engineer’s design for the footing and reinforcement.
Interlocking (segmental) block walls
Interlocking garden blocks are dry-stacked without mortar, with a lip or pin that locks each course to the one below and sets the face back slightly into the slope. They’re good for curves, garden beds and moderate heights. Taller walls rely on layers of geogrid reinforcement laid back into the soil at set heights, so it’s important the manufacturer’s specification is followed. The Quote Yard lists segmental block walls at about $280–$450 per m² in Victoria.
Sandstone and natural stone
Sandstone blocks and natural rock give a softer, more traditional look that suits established gardens. Options include cut sandstone blocks, dry-stacked stone and mortared stone. Dry-stacked walls rely on the weight of the stone, careful fitting and a backward lean, so they need an experienced waller. Published prices include sandstone blocks at about $300–$550 per m² (hipages) and dry-stacked stone at about $350–$550 per m² (The Quote Yard).
Large boulder or rock walls built with an excavator are another option on bigger or rural blocks. Pricing varies widely with the size and source of the rock, so this is one to quote on site.
Gabion walls
Gabions are wire baskets filled with rock. They drain freely, can look striking in modern gardens, and suit erosion control on slopes. The Quote Yard lists them at about $300–$500 per m² in Victoria.
Which option suits your Bendigo property?
| Option | Best suited to | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete sleeper | Most sloping blocks, boundaries, long straight runs | Needs well-designed post footings |
| Besser block | Rendered homes, formal walls, walls near the house | Higher labour cost; needs a strip footing |
| Interlocking block | Curves, garden beds, moderate heights | Geogrid needed on taller walls |
| Sandstone or natural stone | Established and heritage-style gardens | Skilled labour; cost varies with stone |
| Gabion | Erosion control, modern landscapes | Takes more width than a sleeper wall |
For most straightforward retaining jobs on Bendigo’s sloping blocks, concrete sleeper walls are usually the simplest and best value. Block and stone come into their own where looks or the setting matter most.
Heritage areas and front gardens
Parts of Greater Bendigo have heritage controls under the planning scheme, including heritage study areas such as Golden Square. If your property is in a Heritage Overlay, works visible from the street may need a planning permit. Check with the City of Greater Bendigo before you commit to a design.
Drainage and permits apply to every wall
Solid block and mortared stone walls need weep holes or a drainage system behind them so water pressure can’t build up. See drainage behind retaining walls. Permit rules are the same whatever the material: see our permit guide, and for prices across every type, the cost guide.
